What is Advocacy

How Does Advocacy Work?

An advocacy organisation will set about solving the problems of unfair treatment, services that need improving and patient right to services and treatment, in the following ways:

  • Holding public meetings to inform people of the importance of the issues
  • Commenting in the media about issues
  • Calling for public support on an issue
  • Inviting the public to sign petitions
  • Working together with other organisations that focus on different diseases
  • Writing to members of Parliament, provincial legislatures or regulators
  • Meeting with government representatives and stakeholders to discuss issues and lobby for change

  • When an organisation or individual is calling for change they MUST ALWAYS

  • Be truthful
  • Listen to all role-players positions
  • Never promise something that is not possible or sustainable

  • By taking personal responsibility for understanding your cancer and ensuring you are getting the best possible treatment and support you are advocating at an individual. It is also about you being prepared to fight for your rights in order to overcome cancer and using advocacy organisations to do help you do this.
