Other Tips

Other useful tips include…..
  1. When visiting your doctor make a list or take a buddy! It helps to have another person listen to what is said and think of questions to ask.
  2. Ask questions and don’t leave with anything unanswered . If you don’t understand something, ask for it to be re-explained
  3. You own your medical information- know where it is, who sees it and how you can access it.
  4. Create clear written records of ALL interactions with medical aids, healthcare providers with as much information as possible. If it isn’t written down its as if it never happened!
  5. Create a support network around you and delegate tasks.
  6. Ask your medical aid/ healthcare provider for their responses in writing and insist on an explanation of anything you don’t understand.
  7. Take your time. Do not consent to anything without having time to consider all your options. Seek a second opinion – its your right!
  8. When you are diagnosed, give written consent to someone, you trust, to act on your behalf.
  9. As a caregiver if you make promises - follow through!
  10. When seeking information on the internet, ensure it is reputable.
  11. Children are part of the process, include them, support them, and never underestimate their understanding!
